Det sikrer hans rolle som leder, selv om hans embedsperiode udl\u00f8b i 2009, og p\u00e5 trods af hans fremskredne alder p\u00e5 82 \u00e5r. Det forsyner desuden et ellers finansielt korrupt PA med h\u00e5rdt tiltr\u00e6ngte \u00f8konomiske bidrag. Men hvordan forholder dette sig til \u00f8nsket om fred? Prof. Hillel Frisch siger, at det kommer aldrig til at ske. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><em>\u2013 Red.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap dropcap3\">H<\/span>vorvidt Mahmoud Abbas vil g\u00e5 fredens vej i stedet for kun at snakke om den, har v\u00e6ret et debatemne, siden han overtog lederskabet for PA efter Yassir Arafats d\u00f8d i november 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Svaret er et klart nej. Beviset herfor ses af listen af m\u00f8der med USA\u2019s pr\u00e6sident, m\u00f8der, som er mest eftertragt af statsoverhoveder.<\/p>\n<p>Abbas m\u00f8der for tiden amerikanske pr\u00e6sidenter med n\u00e6sten samme hyppighed som Storbritanniens premierminister, USA\u2019s betroet allierede, med en befolkning, der er mindst tyve gange st\u00f8rre end PA\u2019s, og som har en 400 gange st\u00f8rre \u00f8konomisk tyngde. Britisk BNP er p\u00e5 2,8 billioner USD, mens PA\u2019s BNP er p\u00e5 syv milliarder USD (inkl. Gaza, som Abbas ikke har nogen kontrol over).<\/p>\n<p>Men takket v\u00e6re hans kamp mod Israel er Abbas den politiske superstar, som mange af NATO\u2019s statsledere kun kan dr\u00f8mme om at v\u00e6re.<\/p>\n<p>Fra slutningen af 2004 indtil denne sommer har spanske statsledere (konge og premierminister) haft f\u00e6rre \u00e9n-til-\u00e9n-m\u00f8der mellem embedsm\u00e6nd og amerikanske pr\u00e6sidenter end Mahmoud Abbas (11 til PA; 9 til Spanien), selv om Spanien er en mellemstor st\u00f8rrelse europ\u00e6isk stat, NATO-medlem, huser amerikanske milit\u00e6re installationer og har haft varme forbindelser med USA siden Den kolde Krig. Af de tre sidste af USA\u2019s pr\u00e6sidenter bes\u00f8gte kun \u00e9n Spanien, nemlig Obama (i 2016), og otte af m\u00f8derne mellem statsoverhovederne foregik i USA i form af arbejds- eller statsbes\u00f8g.<\/p>\n<p>I kontrast hertil m\u00f8dte Abbas alle tre pr\u00e6sidenter p\u00e5 hans hjemmebane. Han beh\u00f8vede ikke engang at foretage rejsen til Washington.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap dropcap3\">I<\/span>ndtil nu har tallene vist, at det kan betale sig at undg\u00e5 at stifte fred med Israel, men hvordan ved vi, at en fredsaftale vil beskadige Abbas\u2019 status som superstar? Er det ikke muligt, at han vil m\u00f8de den amerikanske pr\u00e6sident endnu mere efter en fredsslutning, end han gjorde i tiden f\u00f8r freden?<\/p>\n<p>Nej, det er det ikke. To s\u00e6t beviser demonstrerer, at en fredsslutning med Israel er d\u00e5rlig for ens internationale synlighed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1683\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1683\" class=\"wp-image-1683 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/hashivah.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/abbas-and-trump-300x270.png\" alt=\"PA President Mahmoud Abbas and US President Donald Trump\" width=\"300\" height=\"270\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PA pr\u00e6sident Mahmoud Abbas og USA&#8217;s pr\u00e6sident Donald Trump<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2022 Det f\u00f8rste bevis er det, der skete for kongen af Jordan efter fredsaftalen i 2004, sammenlignet med det samme tidsrum f\u00f8r fredsaftalen. Mellem 1991 og 2004 m\u00f8dte kongerne Hussein og Abdullah den amerikanske pr\u00e6sident 15 gange. Dette antal faldt til tre over samme tidsperiode efter, at kong Abdullah underskrev fredstraktaten.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Tunesien er til sammenligning et andet [anderledes] eksempel. Sidste gang, en amerikansk pr\u00e6sident bes\u00f8gte Tunesien, var i 1959! Tunesiens hersker, Zein Abidin Bin Ali, m\u00f8dte den amerikanske pr\u00e6sident kun to gange i l\u00f8bet af sit tredive \u00e5r lange diktatur.
